TryMyUI Review and Earning Guide (In-Depth)

TryMyUI offers the opportunity to make money testing websites and apps, but is it legit? Is it safe? How's the pay?

In this TryMyUI review, we'll dive deep into all of those questions and more, sharing first-hand experience testing with TryMyUI, along with reviews, insights, and data from other users and sources around the web.

What is TryMyUI?

TryMyUI is a platform that enables website and mobile app owners to learn about users’ experiences through usability testing. The platform also enables regular everyday internet users like you and I to make money by participating in these usability tests.

If you're not familiar with usability testing, it's a simple type of testing that helps designers and developers discover problems and optimize their designs for the best user experience possible.

Testers don't need any special technical knowledge to participate in these tests, just an open mind, willingness to speak thoughts aloud, and a computer (more details on the requirements and how this works below).

Is TryMyUI Legit?

TryMyUI is a legitimate company. They've been around since 2010, it's easy to find info on them and their founders online, and most importantly, they pay. If they were a downright scam, they wouldn't still be in business.

That said, one reason why a lot of people call TryMyUI a scam is due to their high test rejection rates. Each test goes through a grading process before being cleared for payment, and it seems their graders/clients have pretty high standards, causing a decent number of tests to go unpaid.

I don't think this makes TryMyUI a scam, but it is a bit strange that many who claim to be 5-star testers on other paid usability testing sites have complained about TryMyUI's grading process. Maybe their process is too strict?

Keep in mind, tests can get denied for a variety of legitimate reasons, including bad sound quality, not following instructions, not speaking thoughts aloud, and more. TryMyUI makes this pretty clear when you sign up too; they provide an entire list of reasons why a test might be rejected.

Still, it would be nice to see some sort of compensation for rejected tests, or at least a more thorough review process before just taking sometimes time for free.

• Country requirements:  Worldwide. Just note you'll need access to a PayPal account.
• Device requirements: Laptop or PC for desktop tests, along with a mic to record your voice. Mobile device for app tests. Tests must be done on a private internet connection.
• Payout requirements: PayPal account.
• Other requirements: Must be fluent in English.

Support Quality

Regarding the support service of TryMyUI, I have mixed experiences. At first, I had a problem using the mobile app on the Android platform and when I contacted them, I got a response only 24 hours later with a working solution. Great.

Later though, I had a problem with a test that was rejected due to an error on the app, and wrote them for a solution. So far they haven't responded, so I've given up.

It seems if you're persistent enough, they'll get back to you, but their support is definitely lacking.

How TryMyUI Works

TryMyUI works as a middle-man between web developers and app developers who want to test their designs for usability issues (clients) and everyday people who want to make some extra cash testing websites and apps (testers).

By providing the testing software and handling all payments, TryMyUI makes the process easy for both parties.

When a client wants to get their site or app tested, they go to TryMyUI, create their test, and choose what type of user they want to take it (using TryMyUI's demographic targeting options).

Clients pay monthly for TryMyUI credits. 1 credit = 1 completed test. TryMyUI occasionally offers free trials for new clients (e.g. 5 free tests).

After a test is created, TryMyUI distributes it to testers whose demographics match the requirements provided by the client.

As a tester, you'll speak your thoughts aloud while recording your screen, providing as much helpful feedback as possible. Then, you'll answer a few written questions at the end to summarize your experience.

Most tests take around 20-45 minutes.

Completed tests are graded by TryMyUI graders and the client who ordered the test. If approved, payment ($10/test) is sent to the tester. If rejected (due to bad sound quality, not following instructions, etc.), the client receives a new test free of charge, and the tester doesn't get paid.

Payments are sent out every Friday via PayPal.

TryMyUI Earning Potential

TryMyUI tests pay $10 each, with each test taking 15-20 minutes on average (45 minutes max). The written response section (1-4 questions) takes an extra 5-10 minutes, so you can expect a max of around 1 hour per test or a minimum of 20 minutes.

With this in mind, you can expect to earn anywhere from $10-$30/hour.

Work Volume

Keep in mind, you won't get a consistent flow of tests from TryMyUI. Expect a few tests a week on average. This will vary greatly depending on your demographics and the country you live in.

How to Earn Money on TryMyUI

There are two confirmed ways to earn money on TryMyUI, and one unconfirmed way:

1. Test Websites

To perform website usability tests, you need a computer. Any operating system will work.

After you have the TryMyUI software installed, just wait for a “new test” email notification (you can keep your TryMyUI dashboard open and refresh it manually too). When you see an available test, claim it as quickly as you can.

There are no pre-screeners for tests, but sometimes clients ask for certain requirements regarding your activities or hobbies like “must enjoy football.” Make sure you don't take tests that you don't meet the requirements for, otherwise your test might get rejected.

If you meet the test requirements, click “Take test” to download the test file, then execute it to launch the TryMyUI test software.

Carefully read the frame of mind and task instructions before getting started.

Once you finish and submit the test, you should hear back within a few work days (for me it has always been one work day) mentioning if the test was approved or not, including and any feedback from the client and TryMyUI graders.

2. Test Mobile Apps and Sites

To perform mobile tests, you need a smartphone or a tablet. The TryMyUI app is available on both Android and iOS, and you can receive test notifications straight to your device.

The testing process for mobile tests is essentially the same as for desktop tests.

Tip: You NEED to have “Show Taps” enabled on your phone, otherwise the test will not be accepted. Follow all the other tips above when mobile testing as well.

3. Become a Grader?

This isn't confirmed, but as mentioned above, TryMyUI has graders who rate tests before they're cleared for payment. These graders are supposedly testers who consistently score 5 star ratings, so it may be possible to get offered this position if you do enough tests. I'm assuming you'd get paid for each test you grade.

How to Withdraw Your Earnings

TryMyUI doesn’t have a “cashout” page, or any payment page whatsoever for that matter. Instead, as long as you have money to receive, you'll be paid automatically to your PayPal every Friday.

Summary

TryMyUI surprisingly doesn't have many reviews online. I could only find 23 reviews on their Trustpilot page (where they have an average 2/5 rating at the time of writing) and 11 reviews of Capterra (where they have a 3.6/5 rating). Most reviews were older too.

Due to the low number of recent reviews, it's hard to get an accurate look at TryMyUI in 2021. There are more negative reviews than positive ones, but again, the number of reviews is so low even that isn't very significant (only 4 negative reviews on Trustpilot from 2021). Also, negative reviewers are typically more vocal than positive reviewers.

It seems TryMyUI needs to do a better job of encouraging users to leave reviews of their platform.

Is TryMyUI Worth It?

TryMyUI is worth trying out if you're someone who enjoys testing websites and apps for cash. The site is clean, accessible and easy to use, the recording software is very straightforward, and you can also test on tablets and mobile devices (Android and iOS).

As far as pay, $10/test is a great rate. Plus, the only real requirements for this gig are English fluency, making it an easy way to make money online with no experience.

That said, landing testing jobs on TryMyUI isn't easy; there aren't a ton of tests available each day, and the platform is competitive, so jobs that do come around go quickly. For that reason, if you're not near your computer/smartphone often throughout the day, it might be difficult to make money here.

Also, TryMyUI is known to be more strict with their grading, so beginner testers might have a tougher time on the platform. Still, if you're willing to work hard and potentially have a few rejected tests, TryMyUI's process and feedback could help you improve your testing skills.

How to Get Started

Getting started with TryMyUI is easy. Here's a step-by-step breakdown:

Step 1: Create a TryMyUI Tester Account

To create your TryMyUI tester account, sign up here. Once you set your email and password, you'll need to confirm your email address.

Then, enter your demographic information:

Note: TryMyUI uses your demographic info to connect you with relevant tests, so be sure to fill it out accurately.

After you've filled in your demographic info, you'll be asked to approve TryMyUI's tester agreement, which basically asks you to keep all info from tests confidential, states the requirements for testing, and other important info.

Step 2. Read the Test Guidelines

TryMyUI has a multi-page list of guidelines for testing. Read this carefully as it states all the things you need to do as a tester to make your tests high-quality and helpful (and prevent them from being rejected).

Here's a summary:

• Read all instructions out loud
• Put yourself in the right frame of mind
• Perform all tasks in order
• Follow task instructions closely
• Always keep talking
• Pay special attention to little things that could be improved
• Write clearly and concicely in the written section

Step 3. Take the Qualification Test

The qualification test is an unpaid test that will determine whether you'll be accepted for paid tests or not.

To start, feel free to watch the ‘Example usability test video” — available on the dashboard — to get an idea of what's expected.

Next, download the TryMyUI screen recorder for your device. Keep in mind you must take the qualification test on a desktop.

When you're ready, set 20-30 minutes aside and download and execute the qualification test file. Be sure to read all the instructions and perform each task carefully and as well as you can.

After you're done the test, all that's left to do is to wait! You'll receive an email notification within a few days to a few months letting you know whether you're approved or not.

Step 4. Start Doing Paid Tests

If you're approved, open up your TryMyUI dashboard and look for a paid test. If there are none, wait it out.

Every time you get selected for a test, you will receive a notification via email (and a push notification if you are on mobile), but you need to be fast to catch these tests! Good luck!
