Review Process

This Remotasks review was researched and written by Malaysian Reddit user /u/Suicidal-duck who used Remotasks for about one month, earning $42.86 in the process.

Next, I did a bit of my own independent research into the safety, legitimacy, and reputation of Remotasks, added additional content, and finally edited everything together for this in-depth review. Enjoy!

What is Remotasks?

Remotasks home page

Remotasks is a microtasking site that pays users (independent contractors) to complete small and easy tasks.

By doing these simple tasks, you’ll be helping Remotask's clients (both small startups and large public companies) build and train smarter AI (think self-driving tech, image recognition, categorization, and more).

Is Remotasks Legit?

As of now, I'd say Remotasks is legit. They've been around since 2017 and have a large community of workers, they're active on socials (mainly Facebook/Instagram) and Discord, they have a helpful support team, and most importantly, they pay.

There are some red flags though:

  1. The company address building doesn't list Remotasks or Smart Ecosystem Inc. – This could just be a Google maps error, and Remotasks is a remote company so it's not that big of a deal anyway, but that address might be inaccurate.
  2. Can't find out much about their parent company, Smart Ecosystem Inc. – They don't seem to have a website and the founders are unknown. I've read online that Remotasks was previously owned by Scale Labs.
  3. It's not clear where clients sign up – Remotasks is where contractors sign up to earn money. But where exactly are the tasks coming from? I couldn't find any client sign-up area.
  4. They have mixed reviews online – Read this section to learn more.

Even with these red flags though — although they are a bit strange — because Remotasks pays I'd still say they're legit. Still, they might not be the best company to work for — more details on why below.

  • Age requirement: 18 years old.
  • Country requirements:  Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, Croatia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Eswatini, Ethiopia, France, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Lithuania, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Rwanda, Senegal, Serbia, Somalia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe (source).
  • Device requirements: Laptop or PC. It is not advisable to do tasks on mobile devices. Most classic tasks can be done with either a laptop or a desktop computer. However, LiDAR tasks require a laptop or a desktop with a minimum specification of 4GBs of RAM, GPU (preferably), and a fast internet connection.
  • Payout requirements: Verified PayPal account.
  • Other requirements: Must be fluent in English.

Safety Inspection

  • SSL certificate? Yes.
  • Privacy policy: Here.
  • Personal data collected from Remotaskers:
    • Name, email address, address, phone number, and other demographic information.
    • PayPal address (for payment).
  • Do they ever share user data with third-parties? Only if it is aggregated or de-identified (ie. anonymous). They do not sell personal data to advertisers or third-parties.
  • Do they protect user data? Yes, from their privacy policy: “Remotasks employs reasonable physical, technological, and administrative security measures.”
  • Can you delete your account and data? Yes. Contact privacy@remotasks.com.

Is Remotasks Safe?

In terms of personal data, Remotasks doesn't seem to ask for too much, but they do require some sensitive info like your phone number. If this makes you uncomfortable, I'd avoid the site.

Also, while on the site, as per Remotasks advice, watch out for scammers. If someone (or a task) is asking you for too much sensitive information or they want you to do something that seems unusual, stay away.

As always, complete privacy and security on the web is unrealistic, so use your own caution.

Support Quality

I've reached out to Remotask's support team via email (support@remotasks.com) a couple of times now to ask about their terms and conditions. They were really helpful and straight to the point.

From my past experiences, they usually respond within a few hours which is great.

If you need urgent help, join their Discord server (find it in the settings section of your account). The moderators are almost always online and are easy to contact so your questions will be answered in no time.

How Remotasks Works

The way Remotasks works is simple. After you’ve successfully signed up, you can head over to the training center to complete courses and unlock paid tasks. The courses usually only take around 5-15 minutes to complete.

At the end of each course, there will be a short quiz to assess your understanding of that specific task.

Some of the tasks you'll be doing include things like:

  • Drawing boxes around cars and objects
  • Moderating and analyzing content online
  • Categorizing t-shirts
  • Collecting data
  • Transcribing audio
  • and more

These tasks all have varying levels of difficulty and pay. Some are quick and easy and pay cents per task. Others are tougher and require more time, but pay much better.

Once you start completing tasks, they'll be reviewed for accuracy, and the earnings will be added to your account shortly after and paid out the following Thursday via PayPal.

Remotasks Earning Potential

Here's the earnings data we've gathered from Remotasks users:

  • Highest $/hour: $20
  • Lowest $/hour: $0.05
  • Avg. $/hour: $3.63
  • Highest $/month: $400
  • Lowest $/month: $0.58
  • Avg. $/month: $119.72

As you can see, earnings fluctuate a lot on this platform. That's due to a variety of things:

  1. Volume of work: Our review writer found that projects were almost always available on Remotasks. The more projects you choose to take part in, the more tasks you’ll receive in your task queue. Out of all the Remotasks users we've surveyed, the majority reported receiving work either a few times a week or a few times a day.
  2. Pay per task: The pay varies based on the type of task chosen. Language and 2D tasks pay peanuts ($0.01-$0.15) but only take a few minutes and the 3D tasks pay more but take way longer. So the trick is to try them all out and find the projects that are worth your time.
  3. Accuracy: The amount you’ll earn from each task will depend on your accuracy (ie. how well you do the work). To get the full amount of your earnings, you have to be 100% accurate which, in my opinion, isn’t that hard if you pay close attention when you’re doing your tasks.
  4. Experience: Once you’ve mastered a task, it should be a breeze and you’ll be able to complete tasks more quickly.

Tip: For some projects, you can earn bonuses for completing a certain amount of tasks.

Payment Proof

To further prove that Remostasks is legit and not just another scam, here are some proofs of payment that I took from my PayPal:

Remotasks payment proofs from PayPal

I’ve cashed out twice in the past month, earning a total of $42.75. To my surprise, there were no delays at all. Payments were sent right on time.

It took me only a day to earn my first cashout, but bear in mind, that was only because I was recruited to join one of their high-paying projects. (I’ll talk more about that below and how you can join these projects.)

All in all, I think this is pretty solid evidence that the Remotasks is legit.

Summary

Remotasks is legit and will pay you consistently and on-time via PayPal for doing simple tasks. However, don’t expect to earn much. The pay is low. To earn a decent amount you’ll have to put in a lot of effort. You'll need patience too as some tasks (higher-paying ones) can be difficult at first.

Rating Breakdown

Earning Potential 1.5/5

Based on real user data, you can expect to earn around $3.63/hour on average.

Work Volume 4/5

There are always a ton of projects available but the number of tasks you receive will depend on the number of projects you choose to train for.

Payout Options 4/5

At the moment, the only payout option they offer is PayPal.

Payout Minimum 5/5

No payout minimum.

Payout Speed 3/5

Payments are sent weekly and I have yet to encounter any delays.

Accessibility 3/5

Remotasks is available in select countries only and requires English fluency.

Support 5/5

I’ve reached out to the Remotasks support team a couple of times via email and they typically get back to me within a few hours.

Usability 3/5

The site can be a little buggy sometimes. Beginners might find the dashboard to be a little confusing and hard to navigate at first.

How to Earn Money on Remotasks

1. Training Courses

As mentioned above, before you can start working on paid tasks, you'll need to complete the relevant training courses.

Most of these courses pay a small reward upon completion:

Training course example
A training course on Remotasks that pays $0.03 upon completion

2. Tasks

The main way to earn money on Remotasks is by completing tasks. After completing training courses, you can find tasks in your task queue via the user dashboard:

Task queue launcher

If your task queue is empty, just check back later.

Tasks are split into three categories:

  • Language
  • 2D; and
  • 3D tasks
Remotasks project types

Language and 2D tasks are the easiest and fastest way to earn on Remotasks. They usually only take a couple of minutes to complete.

3D tasks are harder and take longer to complete but they pay more compared to language and 2D tasks. The courses for these 3D projects are generally harder than the rest as well.

To do 3D tasks you'll need a good laptop/computer, stable internet connection, and most importantly, patience. Beginners will struggle with these tasks at first, but with enough practice, anyone will get the hang of them in no time.

Tip: Take your time with the tasks. As mentioned before, your accuracy will affect your earnings. Higher accuracy = more $/task. Lower accuracy could get you banned from similar tasks in the future, so watch out.

3. Reviewing Tasks

Once you’ve gained enough experience, you can earn more by becoming a Remotasks reviewer.

A reviewer’s job is to ensure that taskers perform their tasks correctly. You’ll need to evaluate tasks and identify any possible mistakes.

To become a reviewer, you’ll need to complete as many tasks as you can and maintain an average accuracy of 90% and above.

Reviewers generally get paid more due to the meticulous nature of their work.

4. Referral Bonuses

Another way you can earn is by taking part in the Remotasks referral program. To refer other users, just share your link:

Referral page

As an incentive, both you and the person you refer will earn $5 each, but only if the person you refer earns at least $10 within their first two weeks of signing up.

In my opinion, earning $10 within two weeks is not entirely impossible, but it definitely won’t be an easy feat, especially for newbies.

How to Withdraw Your Earnings

The only way users can cash out with Remotasks is through PayPal, which includes a 2% processing fee.

Earnings will automatically be paid out every Thursday as long as you’ve added your payment info on your account page.

Account page with payment information

The best part, in my opinion, is that you don’t have to earn a minimum amount to withdraw your earnings. You could even be paid in cents!

Note: The site will only allow you to add and edit payment info on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Try and make all the necessary changes by then to receive your payment the following Thursday.

Additional Features

1. Community forums

Remotasks has a dedicated forum where community members can interact with each other. Here, you can find basic information, ask questions, share ideas, or get in touch with other taskers.

2. Discord server

Remotasks also has a discord server for their taskers. The server is pretty active and is the perfect place to hang out and get to know taskers from all walks of life.

With all the active members, questions get answered quicker compared to the forums. In addition to that, they also have a monthly award system where they nominate outstanding taskers every month and the winner gets a prize.

Tip: Remotasks will often make announcements in their Discord server when they’re recruiting taskers for projects. These projects pay really well so I suggest that you keep an eye out for them.

3. Remotasks Bootcamp

The Remotasks Bootcamp is a full 5-day, 7 hours a day paid training program (available in both English and Spanish) that will fully teach you how to earn money on Remotasks.

Remotasks Pros and Cons

The Good

  • Simple to use – Once you get the hang of it, Remotasks is easy to use and earn with.
  • No payout minimum
  • Consistent tasks
  • Weekly payments
  • Nice community
  • Helpful support team

The Bad

  • Very low pay for certain tasks
  • Some tasks are quite difficult
  • Earning are based on accuracy – If you do a job improperly, you'll be penalized and potentially even banned from doing similar tasks in the future.
  • Tasks take a while to be reviewed and approved upon completion
  • Can only cash out via PayPal – Not a huge con, but it is limiting.
  • Site does not work well on mobile
  • Need a Facebook or Google account to sign up – There's no option to sign up with just an email and password.
  • Unclear signup process – I tried signing up, gave them my mobile number, but never got a text to initialize my account. I think it's because they don't support my region but there was no error message or anything confirming this so it was a bit confusing. Also, they now have my phone number, and I've received nothing in return.
  • Not available worldwide – Remotasks is pretty strict on which countries they allow to sign up.

Remotasks Reviews From the Web

Here are some 2021 reviews of Remotasks from Trustpilot and BeerMoneyForum:

Positive Reviews

  • “Good pay [but] you have to work hard. 3d lidar pays well.”
  • “I have more than 4 years working in Remotasks, it changed my life both economically and professionally, I became [an expert] in lidar, and it has become the source of income to help my family and friends in the face of this great crisis that we are living. [Long] live Remotasks and keep growing to help more people!”
  • “Excellent platform, a relief for those who work in it honestly … income is obtained weekly, working from home comfortably … recommended 100%”
  • “A good alternative to work from home with staff that instructs you in the tasks that you must perform”
  • “What I like the most about remotasks are the boootcamp trainings, very good coordination and excellent teachers They always help you in all doubts”

Average Reviews

  • “I left the site because their tasks were just [too] difficult for me. But Remotasks pays good for difficult tasks of course. For easy ones you earn peanuts and sometimes there's no tasks available.”
  • “Its a good and legit site but [the] pay is low.”

Negative Reviews

  • “Their instructions are very redundant, confusing and not well-written. I don't have the time to keep reading all those instructions. They should have been better in providing those instructions. When you start working, these so-called “reviewers” don't provide feedback regarding the task. They just warn you that you did the job wrong. You can't learn that way if they don't tell your mistakes.”
  • “Time waste site because you have to do 1000 tasks and they will add another saying you have to do this task for further and their instructions are worst 🥺…”
  • “I did not [get paid by] Remotasks. I needed the money and I did not [get paid] and I worked a lot

Verdict?

Overall, many of the recent Remotasks reviews I read were positive. Some users seem to be doing great with the platform, claiming its provided them much needed income recently.

That said, there were some very long negative review mixed in. These contained claims of poor support, delayed payments, inconsistent hourly rates, poor training, and bad task reviewers.

If you're a Remotasks user, leave a review below!

Final Thoughts

If the hourly pay/pay per task wasn't so low, Remotasks would be a fantastic site for earning extra money. The UI is good and the tasks are interesting, but the pay is just terrible. Some users claim earning cents per hour.

Still, the site is legit, and they pay out on time, so if you want to try it out, give it a shot.

If you really put some hours into it and do audio tasks for 7 days doing 10 hours a day then you can potentially earn up to about $300 in a week. I feel like it’s really not worth my time considering I’m just getting $3.00 an hour.

The time spent getting to 800 tasks really depends on the length of the audio sentences. The short audio tasks get you faster to the 800 tasks to get your $12.00 bonus. It would normally take way longer than 10 hours to reach 800 tasks.

the task was good for part time or even full time, you just have to be patient for something to stew, as the saying goes, it’s real because I received a payment through PayPal and I’m happy because even though it’s tiring, it’s worth it. and actually you will learn a lot, like annotation and segmentation, the more you will know yourself and what you can do.

Don’t do it. Project task supplies lately have been very erratic at best. So, you end up doing training after training and will get hardly any work after. Payment rates were good about a year ago, but has dropped drastically recently. For some projects, you may end up with earning cents after 30 minutes or more of work. And when I say cents, I mean a few cents like 2, 3 or 4 cents. Their system for checking your quality of work is also very glitchy. So, don’t be surprised that you might get removed or disabled from a project that you spent lots of time training for even if you do your work diligently and properly. And when you seek assistance from support for any problems or issues, you’re gonna end up with a fixed set of responses, most of the time basically telling you that nothing can be done about your problem with support now considering your issue resolved. And that is after days of waiting. While they technically have support for taskers, the general effectiveness of the support team will be like having a conversation with a wall.

They no longer use Discord as their tasker/community server, but have migrated to Slack. That itself is a nightmare where your project channels get added and removed randomly by their Slackbot.

So, for your own good, just stay away from Remotasks. There are other micro tasking sites out there far, far better than Remotasks right now. It was good about a year ot two ago, but now Remotasks will only give you headaches.

I’ve done Remotasks a few times over the past year, and was paid on time up until today! I believe today should be payday but I’ll wait til Thursday. Reading your input on payout, I’ll take it into consideration. But this is my first payout reaching over $111.00, and i try to go into tasking this morning and the site doesn’t load. May be a coincidence, but I can’t even access my Remotasks Dashboard and seems the entire site is down.

There is no way you can make a legit living doing this type of work. They expect perfection on such time consuming projects that pay pennies, or possibly nothing if you do it incorrectly. The emails they send me telling me my work hasn’t been up to their standards have misspellings in them. My account will have a certain amount of money in it one day and the next day it will have less. A complete scam. They blame everything on “bugs in the system”.

    This is a big scam!
They are pusshing you to make more and more trainings because that is how they make money. And when you get a task automatically shows errors on your work. A strategy for time delay. So they say you are slow and not accurate, so you have to do another course.
Plese don’t work for free for this scammers!

It seems like this is happening to me right now, waiting for an $111 payout and this morning it says Internal Server Error when trying to load the website.

As you complete more tasks (with high accuracy), you should receive higher rates and better task availability. Hope this helps!

Good question. I think faking your ID in any way could get you banned from Remotasks.

I tried remotasks here in Nigeria and got only one task for several days now. The tasks are so tedious and the pay is low according to a friend of mine who has been tasking for a long time.

I work for it, in Caracas Venezuela
They pay us like slaves (Venezuela). A task that could take 4 hours has a payment, after revision, of 0.65 USD probably less than 1% of the international rate. If you are good, probably your task can be rates with 0 payment with pink ribbon (I have near 400 task under this condition. If you are a good tasker, and work hard, you could get blocked by the leaders if you ask a lot of questions regarding why you task log is not properly paid or why the pink ribbons task.
Sometimes you could do near 60 tasks in a day but your payment will be zero due to the pink ribbon, bad revisions or those 60 task could value 0.0007 USD

I don’t understand, if you see how it works why do you make 400 tasks for them?

Editors note (translation via Google): They are exploiters … miserable … they lowered the pay for the tasks by more than 300% … before a Falcon task with approximately 60 objects paid you up to $ 8, today it does not pay even $ 1 … They like to humiliate VENEZUELANS, Mr. Victor, Mrs. Dorymar, Mrs. Carla, Mr. Carlos Contreras are exploiting garbage of Latinos

Tasks can even take a month to be reviewed. If they are not reviewed then there is no pay. You can imagine doing a task and get paid after a month and yet the payout is below a dollar.
