Pros, cons, and tips are based on real Guru Freelancer reviews. |
Getting Started ๐ข
To become a freelancer on Guru, you can create a free account by providing your full name and email address, or by signing up via a Facebook, LinkedIn, or Google account.
Once you're signed up, it's a good idea to fill out your profile. This is the first thing clients will see when deciding whether or not to work with you, and by building a strong profile, you'll also increase your chances of showing up in Guru's freelancer search results.
When building your profile, be sure to include a photo of yourself, examples of past work, all your skills, and a friendly keyword-focused intro.
Once your profile is complete, you're ready to start looking for work!
Earning Money ๐ต
Jobs on Guru must be bid on in order to be won. However, you can only bid on a job that (1) Accepts freelancers from your timezone and (2) Accepts freelancers from your location.
Before bidding on a job, you can see things like:
- How much the client has spent (in total) on the platform.
- How many jobs the client has posted.
- Whether or not the client has any outstanding invoices.
- Job requirements (details, number of hours, timeframe, etc.).
Some jobs will also have a pay range, but many do not, so you'll have to provide your own when you bid on the job.
Before bidding, you can also see how many other freelancers have provided a bid/quote, giving you an idea of how competitive the job listing is. If a job seems too competitive, it might be better to save your bids, as non-premium accounts only get 10 free bids per month.
Guru has premium membership options available for freelancers who want to unlock more bids and other special perks.
If you bid on a job and you're selected by the client, congrats! You can now start working together directly on the platform. If it's an hourly project, Guru has a built-in time tracker for easy invoicing.
Cashing Out ๐ฐ
Once you have earned any amount of money (there's no minimum payout), you can cash out your Guru earnings via Direct Deposit, Payoneer, PayPal or Wire Transfer.
After cashing out, you can expect to receive your Guru payout in 0-7 days. (PayPal and Payoneer payments should be received almost instantly. Other methods take 2-5 business days.)

Getting Started ๐ข
Guru clients can get started for free. To create an account, all you need to provide is your full name and email address.
Hiring ๐ผ
There are two ways to hire freelancers on Guru.com:
- Post a job. This is the most straightforward way. Give your job a title, description, and preferences, and freelancers on the platform will send you quotes.
- Find freelancers through the directory. If you prefer to manually search for someone who matches what you're looking for, this is the way to do it. Freelancer profiles can be filtered in multiple ways, and when you find someone you're interested in working with, you can request a quote.
Once you make a hire, all communications, project management activities, and payments happen directly on the platform.
Pricing ๐ท๏ธ
Guru pricing varies based on custom freelancer rates and the pricing you set for your job postings.
On each job, you'll pay a 2.9% handling fee on the invoice value. That said, if you pay using eCheck, physical check, or wire transfer, Guru offers 3% instant cashback, covering the fee completely.

There are several challenges facing this platform
Guru is a freelance marketplace whose rates are at par with other companies. Its about the client not the site.
There are different types of payments methods. Great platform to get money for your skills.
Low pay and freelancers have been underbidding each other. Problems experienced during Withdrawals for some members -- my account got banned without warning with money inside and support didn't help at all.
Sometimes it's dry on this platform (little projects available) and hence no income.
To increase chances of getting hired: Have a great and appealing profile that will attract clients and bid for as many projects as possible.
