    How Does Trim Work?

    For Members

Trim members can save money by using the platform's automatic bill negotiation service, finding (and canceling) unwanted subscriptions, tracking finances, budgeting, and more.

    Getting Started 🔢

Becoming a Trim member is free. To get started, head over to the website and create an account. You can sign up via an existing Facebook or Google account, or by providing your full name and email address.

From there, you'll be asked to provide a phone number to verify your account.

    Saving Money 💵

Once you're in, you can start exploring the platform and trying out some of the features, including:

    • Bill negotiation. Automatically negotiate your cable, internet, landline, cell phone, and satellite radio bills. Just select your service provider, upload your bill, fill out your requirements, and Trim will do the rest.
    • Subscription monitoring and cancellation. Monitor your transactions to find and isolate subscriptions automatically. Trim can even cancel some subscriptions for you in a single click.
    • Budgeting. Enter your income, monthly expenses, and annual expenses, and Trim will output some quick data to help you better understand your financial situation.
    • Tracking. Track your accounts, income, and expenses, and get notifications for things like payday deposits, fees, due payments, large transactions, and more.
    • Liabilities calculator. Enter a target monthly payment for all your liabilities (e.g. credit cards, mortgage, car loan, etc.) and Trim will automatically calculate how long it'll take for you to pay off all your debts, how much interest you'll pay, and more.
    • Car insurance comparisons. Enter your car insurance info and Trim will automatically monitor and compare rates to find you a better deal.

Note that some of the features above will require you to connect your bank account to Trim. This is done via Plaid, a 3rd party financial service.

    Key Points 📝

Commissions / Fees:If Trim successfully negotiates one of your bills and saves you money, they will charge you a 15% fee on your total yearly savings. For example, if they save you $10/month for 12 months ($120/year), they'll take $18 as a success fee. You won't be charged if they fail to get you a better deal.
    Pros:
    • Find automatic savings through bill negotiations and subscription tracking.
    • Simple and easy-to-use budgeting and financial tracking tools.
    • Helpful liability payoff calculator. Perfect for coming up with a quick debt payoff plan.
    Cons:
    • Some members have reported that, when negotiating their bills, Trim messed up their plan or gave them a worse plan during bill negotiation.
    • Pretty basic budgeting and tracking features. If you're looking for something more feature-filled and robust, Trim most likely won't fill all of your budgeting needs.
    • Can't cancel all subscriptions. Some will need to be canceled manually.
Pros and cons are based on real Trim Member reviews.

    Is Trim Legit?

We believe Trim is legit. It was founded in 2015, is owned by OneMain Financial (a large personal loans company), and is backed by multiple investors with over $11M in funding. The only red flag we could find was the platform's lack of social media activity, but this doesn't suggest that Trim is a scam.

    Green flags:

    • Founded in 2015.
    • Owned by OneMain Financial, a personal loans company that acquired the platform in 2021.
    • Is backed by multiple investors, with over $11M in funding.
    • Transparent website with helpful FAQs, info, and details about the team behind the platform.
    • Has positive reviews across the web.

    Red flags:

    • Inactive on social media.

Is Trim a Good Way to Save Money?

Trim isn't a complete replacement for all your financial tools, but it can be a nice addition. For those looking to save money without a ton of effort, Trim is perfect. The automatic bill negotiation can be a huge time saver, subscription monitoring and cancelation is another great way to save automatically, and the other features are cherries on top of the cake. Plus, besides the bill negotiation feature, it's completely free to use.

    Saver Rating:

    Rated 3.47 out of 5
    3.5/5

    What's This?

    ×

This is our carefully calculated editorial Earner/Saver Rating. This rating gives you an idea of how strong a platform's earning/savings potential is. It's calculated as a weighted average based on safety, earning/savings potential, support quality, and more, with earning/savings potential holding the most weight. Learn more about our editorial review process.

    Safety Rating: 3/5

The primary concerns with Trim's safety are the fact it requires phone number verification for all members, bank account connections for certain features, and a photo of your service provider bill for bill negotiation.

Phone number verification is common, so not a huge concern. It doesn't look like your phone number is used for anything other than account verification either.

Bank account connections to Trim are done through Plaid, a 3rd party provider. This means Trim never actually sees your bank login details. However, Plaid does, so that could be a concern for some, though the platform does seem safe and secure.

Finally, uploading your bills to Trim should be relatively safe. However, your bills most likely contain personal information on them, so keep that in mind.

In the end, Trim mentions in their privacy policy that they never rent or sell personal information in personally identifiable form. This means they may sell some of your info (e.g. to advertisers) but never in a way that it would be able to be connected to you. This is good.

Trim also seems to take account and data security seriously, which is always important. We haven't seen any reported data breaches linking back to the platform.

    Support Quality: 4/5

Trim support is active and responsive.

    Savings Potential: 3/5

Trim won't save you a fortune, but with the bill negotiation and subscription cancelation features, the platform can help you save a bit of extra money each month. Still, it's nothing you couldn't do on your own!

    Ease Of Entry: 5/5

Trim is very easy to start using and doesn't require any upfront subscription payment.

    Commissions / Fees Rating: 4/5

Trim charges a 15% fee on successful bill negotiations, which is pretty fair and competitive compared to similar services.

    User Experience Rating: 4/5

The platform is very easy to use. The tools offered are simple. Some users might want something more complex.
